2020 Jackson Street
The San Francisco Decorator Showcase is the West Coast’s preeminent design event. The 2012 affair, which debuted April 28 and will run through May 28, benefits the financial aid program for San Francisco University High, and showcases dozens of the regions top interior and landscape designers. The 11,500 square foot classical revival show-house located at 2020 Jackson Street in San Francisco is the site for the transformation.
Embracing the concept of “wabi-sabi”, Ma(i)sonry Curator, Michael Polenske and Director of Design, Carissa Duncan, furnished the second floor bathroom space using re-purposed industrial fixtures and petrified wood. The artwork includes: “Toggle,” an oil on paper rain coat by Greg Lauren, “Travelers,” airport-confiscated scissors suspended from an umbrella by Michele Pred, and “Light Captured,” freestanding double screens of torched stainless steel mesh over acrylic painted stainless steel mesh by Mirang Wonne.
Ma(i)sonry's Bathroom Design
Each work is a paradoxical response to what is appropriate to place in a bathroom. Ma(i)sonry’s curator and proprietor, Michael Polenske affirms, “Duchamp created Fountain as his most iconic ‘readymade.’ If a urinal can be art, then why not a bathroom as a gallery?”
General admission to the showhouse can be purchased for $30 at the door:
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday:
10am-3pm (last entry)
Thursday and Friday:
10am-7pm (last entry)
Sunday and Memorial Day:
11am-4pm (last entry)
CLOSED MONDAY (except Memorial Day)

I. Wolk Gallery and Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley are delighted to unveil their newest art exhibit, which gallery director Karen Johnston refers to as a “visually stimulating toast to mankind and its origins in nature.” The exhibit, entitled “MENMADE,” will feature a magnificent array of contrasting media by artists Archie Held, James Lloyd, Adam Shaw and Robert Percy. And while the painters and sculptors are male, their art is ultimately a celebration of “created beauty,” which knows no specific gender.
MENMADE will debut April 28, 2012 with an Opening Reception from 3-5PM at I. Wolk Gallery in St. Helena. A Sunday Salon will follow at Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley on April 29, 2012 from 1-3PM. Both debuts will highlight their featured artists with wine pairings by vintner partner, Rivera Vineyards. The exhibit will continue at both galleries through May 17, 2012.

___________________________________________________________________________________________
We had the pleasure of catching up with some of the featured artists to learn a bit about their history and delve into their inspirations for creating such splendid works of art….
The Sculptors: Archie Held and James Lloyd
Trust - Archie Held
Internationally recognized sculptor, Archie Held, founded The Archie Held Studio in Richmond, California in 1985 after being awarded the Jim Marcelius Memorial Award for Sculpture. He continues to create intrinsically simple and timeless pieces to be acquired or admired throughout the world.
Q: Mr. Held, which living person or artist do you most admire?
I would have to say Isamu Noguchi. He was a close friend of the head of the sculpture department at UCLA. I met him when I was a graduate student there, was invited to his studio and was allowed to wander through his warehouse of works by myself; it was an experience I will never forget.
Q: What is your motto in life?
My father’s advice, “the harder you work, the luckier you get.”
Q: What is the biggest compliment someone has said about your work?
“The client is thrilled and wants to use you on another project.” I am grateful for every commission and go to great lengths to give clients my best effort, every time.
***
With a career that spans over 38 years, sculptor James Lloyd has “sought to recreate a new and personal world of forms, which provides the vehicle to express different ideas, viewpoints and feelings.” The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts graduate’s works are as intricate and thought provoking as his answers to our questions…
Q: How has your artistic practice changed since you first began making art?
Silent Head II - James Lloyd
The simplest and straightforward way to convey the difference between then and now is a radical transformation from being unconscious, (what you see is what you get) to being aware of Conscious Itself, (the Mystery of not the mind but the Divine Heart).
Q: What is the one topic you could talk about for days on end?
What is most important is how ALL forms of Fine Art have the unique potential to effect, elucidate, change, inform, and transform an individual, or the human collective psyche, to experience and become More Than the Sum of All the Parts.
The Painters: Adam Shaw and Robert Percy
Theory of Everything - Adam Shaw
“Philosopher,” “poet” and “physician” are a few of the hats Adam Shaw has worn throughout the course of his life, but “painter” is what he may be best known for. Shaw expands on the tradition of abstraction to create glorious masterpieces, which have attracted the likings of hundreds of private and corporate collectors throughout the years.
Q: Mr. Shaw, how would you describe your artwork using four words or less?
Bold, complex, engaging, and transformational
Q: What art do you most identify with?
Crumbling walls, rust, Chinese Landscapes, Rembrandt, maps, Japanese calligraphy, Cezanne
Q: What is your most marked characteristic?
Passionate-curious- philosophical-joie de vivre (that’s all one characteristic)
***
Painter Robert Percy created his first original drawing in 1973, and has continued to use a variety of vertical, horizontal, angular and circular lines in his colorful and dramatic works. His abstract style has been most recently influenced by the eastern Pacific Rim, where he feels there is a “strong and important mix of east and west.” Percy sums up his outlooks and achievements:
Q: What is an artistic outlook on life?
Give of Yourself #101 - Robert Percy
Each painting can and does develop in any number of ways. When actually painting, I merely observe the intuition painting process as the prime mover of the brush so that a greater number of possible aesthetic developments can occur indefinitely.
Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My responsibility is to create abstract images that cause a viewer to have aesthetic experiences which cause a feeling of beauty that transform and transport the viewer.
***
I. Wolk Gallery and Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley look forward to hosting you at the MENMADEe Exhibit. It is sure to be a phenomenal art experience.

Lindsay McCrum, fine art photographer and author of Chicks with Guns will stop by Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley Saturday, March 24 from 12-2pm for a meet & greet and book signing.
Featuring a Napa Valley resident in the book and on the cover, Chicks with Guns is a gorgeous exploration of the powerful connection between women and their firearms. It offers a cultural portrait of women gun owners in America through photographs that are both beautiful and unexpected. Each portrait is accompanied by a personal statement in the subject’s own words that describe her relationship to firearms and the role they’ve played in her life. Because gun ownership and shooting cut across class, age, occupation, background and geography in America, guns are resolutely democratic. And the women depicted in Chicks with Guns represent this variety. They reside in all regions of the country, come from all levels of society, and participate seriously in diverse shooting activities.
Already in its third printing and touted as the most talked about book for Fall 2011, Chicks with Guns has been featured in Today.com, W, Town & Country, Elle Magazine, Time Magazine, Marie Claire, San Francisco Chronicle, and more! We got a chance to ask Lindsay a few questions about her fascinating book and her inspirations behind it…
You published a book about chicks with guns. How you would describe its message?
Chicks with Guns is a cultural portrait of women gun owners in America. The book examines issues of self-image and gender through the visual conventions of portraiture and fashion. I wanted to look beyond the stereotypes often associated with the culture of both guns and women and document women gun owners in the United States as they really are.
There are 15-20 million women gun owners in this country and as Stephen Meagher writes in the introductory essay, their numbers are high but their profile is low. Chicks with Guns is an exploration of a world rarely seen or even considered in some parts of our country. The women in the book come from all regions of the country, all levels of society, and participate in a broad variety of shooting activities. To me, the diversity of this community was surprising and unexpected.
What inspired you to publish this book?
Since I’m a fine art photographer, my original idea was to get twelve to twenty strong images from the series for an exhibition. From the beginning there was enormous interest and enthusiasm for the project and many felt it would make an interesting photography book.
Out of all the ‘chicks with guns’ in America, how many did you photograph, and how did you narrow it down to the women pictured in your book?
Over the course of three and half years, I travelled across the United States and photographed a total of 280 women with their firearms. As you might imagine, the most difficult part of the project was editing the series to 78 portraits and 81 women.
How did you find your ‘chicks’? Or did some of them find you?
All the women I photographed were found through word of mouth and networking within the community of women shooters. I am grateful to have had the extraordinary opportunity to meet and photograph such a diverse and impressive group of women.
What inspired you to switch from oil painting to photography?
In 2001, I went back to school to get my MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Although I was classically trained in oil painting, I started exploring other media at that time. In 2003, I became fascinated by portrait photography.
Which artists/photographers are you most inspired by?
For The Chicks with Guns series, I was influenced by the anthropologist, Margaret Mead, the German portrait photographer August Sander and the 17th century Spanish court painter, Diego Velasquez.
Other artists and photographers I admire are: Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Sharon Lockhart, Pipilotti Rist, Christian Boltanski, Francisco Goya, Jeff Wall, Rineke Dijkstra, James Turrell, Richard Avedon, Thomas Struth, Gerhard Richter, Anselm Keifer, Giovanni Bellini and Alberto Giacometti.
How did you choose your title and was it your first choice?
The title evolved over time. It was originally a short hand, working title I used to describe the series. Surprisingly, it was the women themselves who seemed to really respond to it and like the humor and irony. By the time the publisher signed on, the Chicks with Guns title was attached to the project and he thought it was terrific.
Meet Lindsay Saturday, March 24 from 12-2pm
If you had to pick a favorite photo in your book, which one would it be and why?
It would be impossible for me to choose a favorite photograph from the series. There were so many remarkable women and photo shoots during the making of Chicks with Guns.
Do you own a gun? What kind?
I have never owned a gun. I only shoot cameras.

Each year, Pantone, the global authority on all things color, unveils their Fashion Color Report just in time for New York Fashion Week. Two of the selected colors are Tangerine Tango and Cockatoo, which just so happen to be the colors of Bespoke Collection’s latest wine brand - Recuerdo Wines.

According to Pantone: “Provocative Tangerine Tango, an enticing juicy orange, is a vivacious and appealing refresher to enliven anyone’s outlook this spring. Cockatoo, a tactile blue-green, is sure to make your spirits soar. This unusual hue adds a whimsical touch to the palette and will make a statement this spring.”
The two colors may be an unexpected duo, but they are absolutely complementary. There is something so bold about the exotic orange against the bright turquoise that just radiates confidence and positive energy. While the orange is more fiery, the blue is proven to be a calming color, creating an overall fresh statement.
Maybe it’s your house that needs to be more fashion forward this spring? Try incorporating this spring’s colors into your décor.

Add in a bold lamp base or some patterned throw pillows. Subtle changes, like swapping out a white vase for blue, or picking up orange roses instead of red, can make all the difference in updating your home this season. Experiment with different shades of the two colors until you find the one that appeals most to your eye. For dinner parties, Recuerdo’s Malbec and Torrontes will match your color scheme perfectly, and help to create an overall refreshing experience.

Spring is just around the corner and the highly anticipated release of Blackbird Vineyards’ Principal Proprietary Red Wines—Illustration, Paramour, and Contrarian, is finally here! The 2009 vintage was a milestone year for Blackbird Vineyards through expanded partnerships with a selection of Napa Valley’s most prestigious vineyards. The Stagecoach Vineyard in the eastern hills of Napa, Hudson Vineyards in Carneros, Crocker & Starr in St. Helena, and the further maturation of the Blackbird estate vineyard in the Oak Knoll District yielded exceptional quality fruit.
View Winemaker Aaron Pott shares some stories on the 2009 growing season atop Pritchard Hill, where Blackbird’s Merlot block is located at Stagecoach Vineyard.
Since 1999, the Blackbird Vineyard (a former a walnut orchard first planted with 5,717 Merlot vines in 1997), quietly provided fruit to many of Napa’s finest winemakers, for whom it yielded astonishing comments from Napa Valley veterans and noteworthy editorialists. Purchased by Michael Polenske in 2003, Blackbird Vineyards is now an ultra-premium label in its own right. Fittingly, the word ‘Merlot’ is French patois for ‘little blackbird.’
“With Blackbird, I’ve found a vineyard that can produce a world-class wine,” comments Polenske, “with a Merlot in the style of the ‘Garagiste’ wines that have grown to prominence in the last 25 years, with a nod to the classics on the right bank.” Polenske vision has proven to be spot-on year after year and now we get to know his thoughts on a few more topics…

Describe Blackbird Vineyards using four words or less…
Heaven on Earth
What is your most marked characteristic?
Insatiable Curiosity
Walking through the vineyard makes you feel…
At peace
What is the one topic you could talk about for days on end?
Creativity
Which living person do you most admire?
I have not yet found a replacement for Steve Jobs
If you only had one last sip of wine, what would you choose?
2003 Blackbird Vineyards- our first vintage
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Still working on that….
What is your most treasured possession?
I value my friendships more than any possession

Guest blogger: Carissa Duncan, Director of Design
The name Ma(i)sonry – with a lower case “i” in parentheses – is an invented word using contemporary branding. A hybrid between Maison (French for “home”) and masonry (the craft of working with stones), the (i) then serves as an artistic element connecting the two. We have invented yet another word to describe an event that we just recently launched for members of the design trades. Traditionally referring to social behavior and etiquette, our version of Décorum is a merging of the words décor and forum, and is defined as ‘a gathering of creative minds to exchange ideas and views on all things aesthetic.’
The first Décorum took place on February 4th, where almost 100 top bay area designers and architects gathered at the redwood tables in the Ma(i)sonry garden to participate in an intimate conversation that took place between Llisa Demetrios, an accomplished sculptor, as well as the granddaughter of Charles and Ray Eames, and Diane Dorrans Saeks, bestselling author, design instructor and world traveler.
Diane and Llisa discussed what it was it was like for her to grow up in the Eames legacy, as well as the motivations and ideas behind her work. Llisa’s sculptures were featured in the garden, as well as in the gallery, alongside new work from Lucia Eames (Llisa’s mother), Adam Shaw, Lizabeth Rossof, Damon Hyldreth and Andreas Reimann.

It was an inspiring afternoon to say the least, and we look forward to the next Décorum coming soon!
If you are a member of the design trade or consider yourself a ‘creative mind’ who is interested in attending the Decorum series, please email Carissa.Duncan@maisonry.com

There is no better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart than sipping on a delicious glass of wine and indulging in a savory treat. With chocolate around every corner, Blackbird Vineyards decided to go in a different direction for a dessert, and paired the 2009 Paramour Proprietary Red Wine with a delicious Stilton Cheesecake.
Blackbird Vineyards’ Paramour reveals the passionate relationship between two varietals – Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The wine displays a fragile but irresistible chemistry of 61% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine pairs beautifully with this savory cheesecake, below is the recipe, courtesy of Epicurious.com, for you to try. Enjoy!

Ingredients
For shortbread crust:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
7 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes and softened
For filling:
1/2 lb Stilton, rind discarded and cheese crumbled (1 cup)
3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
3 large eggs
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla
For rhubarb compote:
1/2 cup Port
1/2 cup sugar
24 pink peppercorns, coarsely crushed
2 pounds trimmed rhubarb, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (6 cups)
3 tablespoons sugar for caramel topping (optional)
Directions
Make shortbread crust:
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Blend together flour and sugar with an electric mixer. Add butter and blend until mixture resembles coarse meal (it will not form a dough). Transfer to a buttered 24-centimeter springform pan and press evenly onto bottom. Bake in middle of oven until pale golden, about 30 minutes, then cool in pan on a rack.
Reduce temperature to 300°F.
Make filling:
Beat together crumbled Stilton, cream cheese, and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer on low speed. Beat in flour and add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in sour cream and vanilla, then pour filling over cooled crust in pan.
Bake cheesecake in middle of oven until puffed and pale golden around edge, about 1‚ hours. Transfer cake in pan to rack and run a knife around edge of pan to loosen. Cool completely, about 2 hours. Chill, covered, until cold, at least 4 hours. Remove side of pan and transfer cake to a plate.
Make compote while cake is cooling:
Boil Port, 1/2 cup sugar, and peppercorns in a 12-inch nonstick skillet, stirring until sugar is dissolved, until reduced to about 1/2 cup, 2 to 3 minutes. Add rhubarb and gently stir to coat. Simmer rhubarb, stirring gently once after 5 minutes, until just tender but not falling apart, about 10 minutes, and transfer to a bowl. Chill compote, covered, until cold, at least 4 hours.
Make optional caramel topping:
Just before serving, sprinkle tablespoons sugar evenly over cheesecake and heat with a blowtorch, moving flame back and forth just over sugar until evenly melted and caramelized.
Cooks’ note: Cheesecake and compote can be chilled up to 2 days before caramelizing top of cheesecake and serving.
